Mamava, the Vermont-based inventor of freestanding lactation pods, offers a full line of comfortable all-in-one lactation spaces designed to meet the needs of breastfeeding employees at work and help U.S. workplaces quickly comply with expanded federal labor laws.

The PUMP Act replaces Section 7r of the FLSA (Break Breaks for Nursing Mothers) and now requires all breastfeeding employees to have break breaks and a private (non-bathroom) workplace breastfeeding space. Previously, FLSA protections against on-the-job pumping only applied to non-exempt employees (e.g., employees eligible for overtime). The PUMP Act also protects an employee’s right to complain or sue their employer for non-compliance and outlines a process for doing so.

Mamava lactation pods are private, self-contained spaces with comfortable benches, shelves and sockets for inserting breast pumps. Lactation rooms are available in a variety of sizes to suit the needs of a variety of businesses and organizations. Mamava’s product line includes two larger nursing cabin models: Mamava Original and Mamava XL, designed for wheelchair access. The range also includes the compact Mamava Solo and room furniture called Mamava Mini. Purchasing a pod instead of building a room allows businesses to avoid high construction costs and permits. All of Mamava’s pods come with integrated furniture and can be assembled in a few hours. They are designed with facilities in mind: easy to clean and easily moved as needs change. Mamava pods start at $9,500, not including shipping and delivery.

“Passage of the PUMP Act ensures that all breastfeeding parents have access to breastfeeding accommodations at work. We created Mamava to make breastfeeding easier for all parents, which requires support in the form of good public policy.” said Sascha Mayer, co-founder and chief experience officer of Mamava. “As a business, we smartly plan to meet public policy with infrastructure that allows businesses to cost-effectively comply with the law. The momentum behind the passage of the PUMP Act positions us to fulfill our mission of supporting, celebrating and normalizing breastfeeding for American parents.” A recent survey found that 31% of working parents plan to breastfeed for longer in response to new breastfeeding guidelines launching in 2022 from the American Academy of Pediatrics.

Mamava’s customer base spans all 50 states and sectors and includes airports, retail locations, hospitals, museums, universities, football and baseball stadiums, schools, zoos, government agencies and military bases. The free Mamava app helps parents find thousands of nursing spaces, not just Mamava pods. The company acquired its own manufacturing facility in Springfield, Vermont in 2021 and partnered with Medela, voted the most trusted breast pump brand in America*, to create comprehensive lactation benefits for employers plan.

“As employers evaluate policies, some offices are being redesigned to better meet the needs of hybrid work environments. But even if employees are only on-site a few days a week, businesses still need to comply with lactation accommodation laws and ensure employee needs are met ,” Mayer said. “We’ve designed it with the physiological needs of pumping in mind and providing best-in-class lactation options and support, not just making them compliant. This will also drive the development of better lactation policies and staff training.”

To help employers understand how the PUMP Act will impact their business, Mamava will host a free webinar: Unpacking the PUMP Act: What Employers Need to Know on Wednesday, April 12 at 2 pm ET. Speakers include Sascha Mayer, co-founder and chief experience officer at Mamava; Dana Kirwin, director of employer and government relations at Medela; and Liz Morris, JD, associate director of the Center for WorkLife Law. Mamava is committed to changing breastfeeding culture. As the creators of the freestanding lactation pod, Mamava provides breastfeeding parents with a private, dignified and comfortable space to pump or nurse – whether at work or on the go. The free Mamava app helps breastfeeding parents find thousands of nursing spaces and unlock Mamava pods (available for iOS and Android). Founded by women, Mamava is a proud B Corp that designs, manufactures and assembles nursing pods at its manufacturing facility in Vermont. Founded in 2013, Mamava has provided thousands of lactation spaces to organizations including airports, hospitals, stadiums, schools, small businesses and Fortune 500 companies.
